You just dug your own grave. (J4M-80)

By admin on July 26, 2010, 2:22 pm

omae/??=impolite form of YOU. Do not use this word unless REALLY angry. Instead use the person’s name or, if you must, “anata”. jibun/??=oneself BTW, this could be used to refer to your own person (“me”) or someone else. (“yourself” or “you”) jibunde/???=by yourself. no/?=’s boketsu/??=grave wo/?=article indicating the receiver or object of the verb horu/??=to dig hotta/???=dug (past tense of horu/??) na/?=just a stressor Ironically, despite the similarity to the English expression, in Japanese this is actually not as strong as to dig one’s own grave. I’d say it’s more like “to shoot yourself in the foot.” STUDY!

1-Kimi can be used for women.
2-The point of this lesson is not the many ways to say YOU. But look for that. Coming soon!

  12. Gimmeaflakeman says:

Yes, but being TOO informal with someone can be considered RUDE. So it’s OK, but be sure you’re friends.

  13. Gimmeaflakeman says:

    Gotcha!

  14. RelVleDy says:

Yea I’m curious about this too. I thought omae was simply informal. I don’t think it’s necessarily used when your angry and I certainly wouldn’t think it’s strictly for when the speaker is VERY angry. I could be wrong though.
