What is Stress?

Have you ever asked yourself what stress is? if you have, you probably came up with the following explanation or something close it. Stress is state of being discouraged or defeated and the main cause for this state is a stressor according to the explanation of a historical researcher, stress comes when we no longer have enough resources to meet the demand that is around us. Stress is very individual and people will react differently to different stressors. Stress can affect you in a good or bad way. This is to say that when stress enables you to outperform yourself, you can appreciate its presence. One example is when an athlete is running a race and the more he puts in more effort or stress to his body, the more he has the chance to win. There are several causes of stress and they include survival stress. This kind provokes our fight or flight mechanism where we fear physical harm to our body. There are times where you will find yourself worrying for no major reason about your life and of others. This kind of stress is called the internal stress. Environmental stress will be caused by factors which are around like noise and others. Other causes of stress can be fatigue and overwork. There are very many symptoms of stress which will inform you that you are suffering from stress. Symptoms can be cognitive, emotional, behavioral, physical and others. Some of the cognitive signs are memory loss, lack of concentration, poor judgment, trouble thinking clearly, racing thoughts, constant worrying, seeing the negative only and the list is very long. Some of the most common symptoms are the emotional ones and they include moodiness, agitation, restlessness, short temper, irritability, feeling tense, inability to relax, isolation, depression and others. Physical symptoms of stress are so common and they affect the functions of our bodies they include the following headaches, muscle tension and stiffness, nausea, dizziness, insomnia, chest pains and the list on physical symptoms is endless. The above signs will not automatically suggest that you are suffering from stress because many conditions manifest themselves in this way. To be totally sure, you have to go to a health professional who will be in a position to undertake tests and ask you some questions to diagnose stress. There are causes of stress that rank as top 10 in causing stress and they include the following. The number one cause of devastation is the death of a spouse. This is the closest and the most trusted person and when they are gone, they leave a void that simply cannot be filled by any other person. It will take time for them to heal and if they do not, seek professional help. Others are divorce, separation, jail term, injury, retirement, loss of job and others. Remember, keep positive in life for you to overcome hurdles that are bound to be on your way. Seek professional help for more advise and even medication if nothing else works.
