American Pregnancy Association Reports Millions of Women Annually In Question About Pregnancy Symptoms

Irving, TX (PRWEB) April 24, 2007

For six million women a year the symptoms of pregnancy are followed by a positive pregnancy test, but for at least another six million women annually, symptoms are not what they seem.

That’s largely because the first tell-tale signs of pregnancy can be caused by many other factors like tension or stress, changing or stopping hormonal contraceptive use, breastfeeding, excessive weight gain or loss, or fatigue.

The American Pregnancy Association hears from thousands of these women who need clarification on the pregnancy symptoms that they are experiencing. Some of these questions are from women who are trying to conceive, whereas others are hoping their symptoms may be related to something else.

“More than a fifth of the inquiries we receive are questions related to the possibility of being pregnant,” explains Dr. Brad Imler, American Pregnancy Association President. “We consistently hear from women who want to know what different symptoms mean and how to tell if they’re pregnant or perhaps just pre-menstrual.”

Several symptoms of pregnancy, such as breast tenderness, headaches, or nausea, can also precede a woman’s menstruation. If women aren’t trying to become pregnant, they may disregard these symptoms as nothing more than a usual part of her menstrual cycle. Every symptoms of pregnancy has the possibility of being explained away by something else.

The alternative possibilities for the symptoms and the fact that more than fifty percent of women turn out not to be pregnant easily explains the number of questions women have about the possibility of pregnancy. For women trying to decipher between a potential pregnancy and a menstrual cycle or some other explanation, the American Pregnancy Association provides a wealth of knowledge at no cost to its clients.

The free education support helpline answers questions about pregnancy at (800) 672-2296. Women can also learn more about pregnancy by visiting the American Pregnancy Association Web site.

Office Stress: How Do Women Deal with Stress at Work?

Monday, February 28th, 2011

There are growing numbers of women who experience office stress on a regular basis.  The number is increasing.  In a difficult economy, you may find it more difficult to cope with stress at work.  Layoffs and budget cuts are constant reminders of the fragile work environment that many individuals find themselves experiencing.  Yet, women, have additional stressors that affect them such as discriminations, stereotyping, and work/home balancing acts.  To assist with these unique stressors, employee policies must be enacted in the workplace to ensure that women are not penalized in their ability to maximize their career potential.  However, on a more general level there are office stressors that women can combat by using specific stress management strategies.  By identifying your stressors and then matching appropriate stress management techniques, you have a greatly chance of reducing the levels of stress at work.  Lowering your stress will allow you to be more productive at work.

Causes of Office Stress

Can you identify what is causing your stress at work.  Identifying the major contributor to stress at work will help you devise the most helpful stress management strategies.  Consider the following sources of stress and see which are the major culprits in your life.

Is there bullying or harassment, by anyone, not necessarily your manager?
Is it your lack of control or a feeling of powerless in determining your own responsibility?
Are there continuous and unreasonable performance demands?
Is there a lack of effective communication in explaining job expectations?
Do you fear a job layoff or have a lack of job security?
Are there long working hours or increased demands for overtime due to staff cutbacks?
Are you forced to spend excessive time away from home and family?
Is there excessive office politics and conflict among staff?
Do you have a feeling that there is a lack of appreciation for your work?

The key to reducing stress at work is to remove you from the stressor.  Developing new habits which regularly remove you from stressful situations is essentially how to manage stress on a permanent basis. So once you have identified the stressor or stessors, you can target ways to reduce their impact.  The ability for you to manage your stress at work can be the difference between your success and your job failure.  The better you can manage your own stress, the more you will positively affect your co-workers and the less these individuals’ levels of stress will negatively affect you.

Beware of the Warning Signs of Excessive Office Stress

When people feel overwhelmed, they can loose confidence in their ability to perform well at work.  If the warning signs of office stress go unattended, they can lead to more serious problems.  Look for these warning signs if you believe that you have been experiencing high levels or a constant amount of stress over a period of time.

Headaches or Muscle Tension
Trouble Sleeping
Problems Concentrating
Short Temper
 Upset Stomach
Job Anxiety
Apathy or Social Withdrawal

Remember.  Stress significantly reduces brain functions such as concentrating on, analyzing, memorizing, and interpreting data. These are all important components of effective work performance.  If you are suffering from stress at work, and it is beginning to affect your health or work performance, take a moment to reflect on what is causing the stress and what stress management strategies you can use to change the situation.  Commit to change the situation before the situation has a more dangerous consequence on you.

Women Entrepreneurs: Are Struggles With Overeating And Weight Keeping You From Your A-Game?

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Do strong emotions or stress impact your eating? Do you reach for a snack when you are stressed or bored, tired, or anxious? Do you nibble mindlessly at your desk? If so, it’s a signal that emotional eating is a part of your weight battle. Overeating and emotional eating often occur when you have “too much to do and too little time. ” The pressure to accomplish all that you do can actually contribute to the problem. Food is easy to turn to for comfort, stress relief or a quick reward. When time is at a premium and your schedule is demanding, making healthy choices can be a serious challenge, and “me” time can feel like an impossible dream. Struggles with weight are painful, they affect self esteem, and they can also affect the way you show up in your business. Frankly, when we are struggling with anything, when we are feeling less than confident, we simply don’t shine. And when we aren’t feeling our best, we tend to make different choices than we do when we’re running at one hundred percent. It’s not about hitting a magic number on the scale. It’s about finding a way out of the struggle, and creating a sense of personal effectiveness with food and weight that make the difference. Are you struggling with weight and does it keep you from shining? In the last week, three business owners have told me about business-building activities that they are avoiding because they feel uncomfortable with their current size and weight. These women are smart, dynamic, and vibrant, but the way they feel about themselves leaves them limiting their visibility. Can you imagine the toll this is taking in their business? The women I talked to are:• Avoiding opportunities to be front and center   (public speaking, presentations, having their    picture taken)• Spending a lot of time hoping no one will notice   them because they feel self conscious. That’s a    VERY difficult place from which to nurture a   thriving business. • Feeling far less confident and self-assured than   they should. Despite their impressive talents and   accomplishments, what stands out for each of them   is that they haven’t lost the weight they want to. • Putting off networking activities “until they lose   the weight. “• Not dressing in a way that expresses the vitality   each of them absolutely sizzles with. Until we talked, these women were also frustrated   with themselves because diets haven’t helped them   lose weight in the past. The truth—diets don’t   work. And diets don’t address the root causes of   the overeating and lifestyle issues of busy   business owners that can contribute to struggles   with weight. What do busy solo entrepreneurs need to lose weight and make peace with food once and for all?• A unique approach that’s do-able. Needs vary, but everyone needs a plan that fits their style, their preferences and their life. Consider your schedule, your tastes, and your strengths and weaknesses when designing a plan of attack. • A plan that addresses emotional eating. Food is a   tempting place to turn to try to take care of   needs  and feelings and running a business can be   stressful. Just counting calories won’t help you   figure out what to do with stress eating, comfort   eating, or nervous eating at your desk. • A program that helps with the mind game. Weight   struggles can be a head game and mindset is   everything.   Losing weight while growing back any   confidence that has been sacrificed is essential   for the entrepreneur who wants to bring her most   confident A-game to the table. High achieving   business owners also often struggle with   perfectionism, asking for help, taking time out   for exercise and stress management, and finding   ways to stay on track and accountable while also   managing everything else. Don’t fall prey to the   myth that you have to struggle alone. • A plan that includes self care and me-time.   If   you are using food to fill in gaps, cope with   feelings, reward yourself or just zone out, you’ll   need to be prepared with alternatives that work   with your life and your business. As you move forward with your weight loss or healthy eating goals this January, make sure you’ve got your bases covered. Addressing the non-food aspects of weight loss can make all the difference, can eliminate a lot of the struggle, and can help you and your business really shine.
