So You’re Stressed Again? Here Are Quick Tips to Fight It

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Almost every day we encounter stressors that either make us or break us. And when do break us, it’s not really nice. Nobody wants to be down and stressed, and nobody wants to hear glasses being smashed everywhere. But stress occurs, and it’s up to us how to respond to it. Sounds like you’ve read something like this before? Well read on because you need a reminder. Here
are some of the things you can do to fight that unwanted stress.

1. Exercise. Walking not only makes you fit, it could also relax your tense muscles, and gives you time to think through more clearly. Sometimes the solution to that one problem you’ve been dying to solve will come out when you least expect it. So take a brisk walk outside. Other recommended forms of physical activities are tai chi and yoga. They both soothe the muscles,
and make you have that quiet time with yourself.

2. Meditation. It greatly relaxes the mind by directing your attention onto an
object. Health benefits are reported from meditating everyday, like lowered blood pressure and increased blood flow. I’m not the best person to give you an advice about the best way to meditate, but if you want to give it a try, then pick a book for beginners and practice meditating everyday, before you see the results.

3. Breathing. Taking long deep breaths and directing all your attention to each breath you take in a form of relaxation. Do it every day, especially when stressors attack you.

4. Vitamin C. Vitamin C is a known stress buster. Our adrenal glands release cortisol that triggers the “flight or fight” response to stress, allowing us to spring into action when we sense danger. But frequent exposure to situations that cause high levels of stress hormones impairs one’s learning and memory, making us more susceptible to depression.

In one German study, 120 people were subjected to a public speaking task with math problems. Half of them were given 1,000 mg of Vitamin C while the other half weren’t. Those who got the vitamin reported being less stressed.

In another study, Vitamin C fed to rats undergoing stress had decreased their

cortisol levels and prevented then from showing signs of physical and emotional stress, like weight gain.

Take your daily doses of Vitamin C found in fruits and vegetables, and is also
available in supplement form.

5. Herbal teas. If you want to be relaxed, there is a way for you to achieve that without taking medications. There are some herbs that are known to relax the mind. Make a tea out of Chamomile, hops and lemon balm. They are available in your health stores.

Not every stressful situation is bad. A public speaking or work presentation molds us into better people, and makes us realize that we are capable of doing and overcoming big hurdles. How we respond to the world around us is in our hands, and the less we react negatively, the less stress there is, making us happier and more peaceful. Take care!

Feeling Stressed At Work? Then Don?t Grab A Coffee!

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Now my line of work takes me to an airport and Friday mornings at an airport can be absolute chaos. It’s the start of the weekend, lots of people returning home or just wanting to get away for a mini-escape, and this is exactly how it was yesterday. All flights to all destinations were full, the check-in queues were massive, and lots of people were missing flights because of a new airport motorway that had just opened up that morning.

As you can imagine there were lots of frustrated, disgruntled and unhappy passengers – and who do you think they take these frustrations out on? You guessed it … the customer service staff on the ground, which includes ‘Moi” and all of my fellow colleagues.

Now after ‘Disgruntled Passenger Number 6″ – I was starting to feel a tad stressed and a bit tired of being the receiver of such aggression. Some days I feel like I’m just a highly paid punching bag (well, I don’t know about the “highly paid” bit). Anyway, by mid morning most of us felt like we desperately needed of a good cup of coffee to help alleviate the stress.

Well that was what I thought until yesterday. You see I had just finished reading an article from Yuri Elkaim’s Eating for Energy book the night before, highlighting the negative effects that coffee has on the body if you are stressed.

Some of these included the following:

* Coffee actually intensifies stress causing an average 40% increase in adrenaline. This results in increased blood pressure, heart rate, perspiration, nervousness, and irritability.

* Coffee also increases the secretion of stomach acid by 400%, contributing to gastritis and peptic ulcers.

* According to a British Medical Journal, coffee drinkers have a 50% higher risk of heart attack.

* Coffee causes a significant loss of nutrients – magnesium, potassium, calcium, zinc, and B vitamins.

* Coffee is a major source of cadmium which is a heavy metal that has been linked to cancer and immune suppression.

Now if you’re a woman – the facts are even scarier.

* Coffee is linked to ovarian cancer, bladder, and kidney cancers.

* According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, coffee increases the risk of miscarriage and can double the rate with just 1 cup per day!

* Coffee reduces fertility. More than 1 cup per day makes a woman half as likely to conceive (American Journal of Epidemiology).

So next time you’re feeling stressed – don’t go for a latte, 1/2 cap, flat white, mocha, full strength expresso or whatever – because you may as well stick your hand in a power point!

Instead, reach for a Green Tea which contains the natural mood enhancer Theanine, which has been shown to reduce mental and physical stress and promote a feeling of relaxation.

Ahhh … now that’s the kinda thing that I’m looking for. Perhaps we should give out complimentary cups of Green Tea to passengers as they arrive at the airport?

These 3 Things Can Take Your From Stressed Out to Stress Free

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

Many of us are stressed beyond belief, but we can’t figure out why. And, looking at the retail sales of anxiety medications and over the counter drugs, we’re living in one of the most stress filled times in human history. It could be the fear that we’re losing our retirement money in the tanking stock market. Or possibly it’s the fact that one fifth of the job force where we work has been let go and we think we might be next. Or maybe it’s wondering how we can possibly bypass the negative influences of society to raise our children in a moral way. All of these things, and more, are slowly wearing us down and fraying our nerves to the point where we’re desperately looking for solutions to take some of the stress out of our lives.A primary cause for people being so stressed is the feeling that they have somehow lost control over the important things in their lives. To obtain or regain that control, there are three primary things that you have to have in your life – money, health, and security.  It’s easy to be relaxed and stress free when you’re in control. When you have these three things – you’re in control, and relaxed.Money – our society is controlled by money. If you have money, you can live in a nice and decent neighborhood and not have to worry about security. If you have money, you have health insurance, and can be sure that in the event of an illness or an accident, that you can get the best health care possible. But, in a time like this, when people are having trouble finding jobs, how can you be sure that you have all the money you need? The answer is, if you depend on others, then you can’t. If you want to have the money necessary to give you the stress free life that you crave, you have to take control of your livelihood outside of your employer’s hand. Doing that takes planning. And by planning, you’ll be able to decide if you need to go to school to get more skills, if you need to network to get more money making opportunities, or if you should start your own business.Health – without health, life is not much fun. Being sick, is stressful not only on your mind and body, but it can be financially draining as well. There’s no way that any of us can guarantee ourselves an injury and illness free existence. But what we can do is to control the foods we eat and how we take care of ourselves. Researchers estimate that many of the catastrophic diseases that shorten our lifespans – heart disease, cancer, strokes, hypertension, diabetes – are largely triggered by lifestyle and food choices.Security – everyone, even animals, feel less stressful when they have security. We have policeman to make our cities and towns secure. We have soldiers to make our country secure. And we have building guards to make our homes and offices secure. And as a result, we’re less stressful. If you have these three things – money, health, and security – no matter how you get them, you’re guaranteed to live a pretty stress free existence.
