Key Symptoms of Parent Stress

It is important to recognize the symptoms of parental stress before it is too severe. Everybody knows a certain amount of stress in their lives, whether family, work, finances or illness … the list is endless. Being a parent adds yet another dimension to the causes of stress. Lack of sleep, friction with the children, additional concerns, and more drain on finances, and conflicts between different spheres of life, all contribute to higher levels of parental stress.

What are the symptoms of stress that you should pay attention? Symptoms of stress can be physical or mental. First, let us consider the physical symptoms. If you feel more tired than usual, but your sleep pattern has not changed, it could be a clear indication that your stress levels are increasing. Not sleeping is another sign that something could go wrong. If you are getting headaches, pain, teeth grinding, or have stomach problems they may be signals from your body telling you something is wrong. If you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome or other similar problems, they may worsen during periods of stress. Stress can also cause low immunity, so if you seem to catch colds and bugs than usual it may also be a sign of stress for parents.

The mental symptoms are often more difficult to get noticed and can be seen by other people before realizing they are there. If you are distracted or lose concentration easily could certainly be because of parental stress. In addition, mood changes are another indicator. If you are frustrated, anxious, more angry than usual, or simply feel you have too much to do and do not know how to cope, it is very likely that your stress level is too high.

Information on how to relieve stress is readily available, but what you remember most, your stress levels are not the fault of your child. Children are not as sensitive to your needs as an adult might, so they will not necessarily change their behavior depending on your mood or your level of fatigue. If your partner may know to leave you alone when you are cranky, your child probably will not. Remember you can always get help from outside your family, manage your stress. Do not let things go too far, as you might end up with serious mental health problems. Try to deal with parenting stress as it happens and you deal much more easily.
