Traumatic Stress – Part Ii: the Container

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

To keep the memories of abusive experiences aside, some lock their emotions, thoughts and experiences away. Some describe their disturbing memories as if they are in a folder, disk drive, cabinet, shelf, or outside the body. For others, the containers “are described as being out of sight, out of sight, perhaps out of mind. Despite being sealed by these distractions, each container will not be opened, despite fears of the person to open. Trauma means opening the container, carefully and with appropriate support and clinically healthy. Releasing into trauma on the body can be a gift, but one to open with consciousness.

Your body has a memory

As you remember the first part of this article, the nervous system remembers trauma. Symptoms of PTSD that you are giving her way of saying: “Hey, face it!”

Therefore, if you start treating trauma, it is important to understand that your body has memory and will react. Because your body “into” the memories, thoughts, emotions, and images of what happened, it is very possible that you experience and outside of your sessions.

The nature of trauma work

Because it is easy to be overwhelmed by emotion, not a process to be undertaken lightly or randomly, or without strong clinical support. As with any treatment, there are risks inherent in your work from trauma. You may have thoughts of distress, from parties uncomfortable in your story, or feel difficult or overwhelming emotions. On the other hand, many take the risk and “open” these containers with a therapist experienced trauma. Consequently, they experience something different, a greater sense of peace, and reducing symptoms.

Education

The therapists’ trauma does work “must include trauma” looks “and how to identify it. More than a simple measure to diagnose the symptoms of traumatic stress, he or she must inform you of the reasons why the symptoms occur. L learning to fight, flight or freeze “response from your body’s survival system, is the key to the healing process. Education about trauma, its effects, symptoms and biology can normalize your experiences. It will also help you and your therapist to create a map to guide treatment.

Grounding skills

As I shared in previous articles, dissociation is a coping mechanism that makes trauma survivors feel “disconnected”, “not all”, “out of body” or “as if it did ‘ is not produced. “This internal switch is activated when the body and mind are overwhelmed by the trauma. dissociation serves to protect you from harm but may, over time, lead to significant distress.

If you work on your trauma symptoms, ask about “the land of skills.” Grounding skills can help those who dissociate to feel more connected, better able to return to the present moment, and feel calmer. You can create a toolbox of ground skills that you can access when you need it. Whether in or outside the therapist’s office, you can use these specific tools to help you feel safe . If you have overwhelming thoughts, emotions, memories, or sensations, make sure you share them with your therapist.

Physical safety and emotional

With trauma work, you can become “flooded” with emotions, physical sensations, or images that you had not thought about for a long time. For this reason, it is imperative that you have a lot of preparatory work, before discussing what happened to you. It is also imperative that you and your therapist regularly monitor your sense of emotional and physical security. The ability to relieve a healthy self, manage high levels of distress and seek help, are very important when doing trauma work. For example, if you use substances to deal with distress, you must learn the techniques of first alternative. Therefore, it is also necessary that you have open communication with your therapist, and a sound support system that you can access.

EMDR: A type of trauma

There are several approaches for working with trauma and EMDR is one of them. It is an approach to therapy research and requires special training. EMDR was developed by Francine Shapiro, and uses a combination of therapeutic approaches to bilateral stimulation i. e. the use of alternating left-right tracking which can take the form of eye movements, sound or tactile stimulation.

EMDR is used to handle troubling thoughts, feelings, sensations and images of what happened to you. It activates the nervous system, and your inner healing mechanisms to release what I “locked” during the trauma. Your nervous system reprocessing what happened, he “buys” that you are safer now. It can stop giving you the fight, flight or freeze response around what happened, which reduces symptoms of PTSD. EMDR also helps you reach a healthy conclusion what happened. Although no treatment can change the past, EMDR has the potential to change your response so you do not get hijacked by your emotions, thoughts and feelings of what happened.

My hope is that this article gave you some things to consider original, if you decide you want to open the containers, and treat any history of trauma. Deciding to work on memories of abuse is not small, but can be an important part of your healing process. I am honored that the first step, and I wish you the best.

Coping With The Stress of Christmas Shopping

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Christmas is a season of great expectations. Newspapers, magazines and TV commercials are full of images of a perfect Christmas. We are given the impression that if we buy the turkey, stuffing and do than give them presents, so we too can be like the characters depicted in the photographs. This exists only in fiction, but it always puts us under pressure to excel.

The key to managing any type of stress is self-consciousness. When we see the development of anxiety, you can do something. The first step to cope with the stress of Christmas shopping is to put in perspective. Ask yourself – if I do not get the hand that fed, organic, free range Bronze Turkey What’s the worst thing that can happen? My hungry family? Will I lose a member? Is it life or death? When you know it’s just a case of succumbing to hype, you can get a grip on your feelings.

If you really want to avoid the stress of Christmas shopping, so do not. Many people were disappointed by the commercialization in Christmas. This has led to an increase in charitable giving at Christmas. Three years ago we opted to buy gifts for children in the family and give us the money that was spent on adults to help a small local association. Our parents were happy to respect that, and they donate to various charities, the money they spent on us.

Many of us love to receive something that was done by hand, so make the most of your creativity. Instead of giving grandfather another pair of socks consider a collage of family photographs that reminded him of happy family gatherings. If cooking is your strong point which could be better than some homemade tarts?

You can enjoy selecting and giving gifts, but I hate the crowds in stores and queues at checkouts then put online and mail order stores are alternatives to the large fireplace in the cold wet streets city. So many stores have websites nowadays that you can shop in your favorite in the comfort of your own home.

Plan your gifts. Make a list of everyone you want to make a gift to allocate a sum of money, remember that nobody really wants and a store with something specific in mind. You can ask your friends and your family give you a wish list of 3-4 items from which you can select an item. In this way, it will be a pleasant surprise rather than a terrible shock.

Secret Santa may be an alternative to buy something fun for everyone and in the current economic climate to keep prices affordable. Often, people prefer this one really a lot of little things. Alternatively, if you belong to a family who likes a lot of small gifts to open Why not create a challenge, e. g. How can you get this for £ 5 per head?

For those hard to please the young people of the book tokens and gift certificates are generally accepted with gratitude, and can be hoarded until the number of cases where the beneficiaries can be even more for your money . My son loves to see how many merchants, he can get with vouchers or money in January.

A friend of mine focuses her gifts for birthdays and Christmas all his adult friends get a very nice Christmas card containing a Lotto scratch card. He’s nice, funny and could spend a significant amount.

I think the best advice I’ve ever been given on Christmas shopping was “Do not take your husband. And for men – shop before Christmas!

To avoid the rising of the High Street Pick of the day moments that are not so busy. Now that many shops open late in the evening it is easier to find a quieter time outside the 9-5 edge.

You have a tea break – a study by University College London in 2006 found that black tea can lower levels of stress hormones in your body. If you prefer coffee, then stick with caffeine as caffeine can mimic the symptoms of stress and anxiety increases. When you take a break from the opportunity to breathe properly – in and out of 7 to 11 will help you relax, because that is what will really relaxes the muscles. Eat something with slow release carbohydrates you will keep you supplied with your purchase.

I suggest wrapping your gifts as and rather than leave until the last minute. If the thought of wrapping paper, you broke out in a cold sweat, you can get gift bags now in almost every size and shape imaginable. Some stores and Internet outlets wrap them for you, but it will normally be liable to a small charge.

And finally – next year start your Christmas shopping, sales in January!
