How to Live a Stress Free Life

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

To achieve a stress life, you must know how to manage stress itself. Stress management starts with identifying the source of stress in our life.

Here are some TIPs on how to achieve a stress free life:

Know your limits and stick to them. Whether in your personal or professional life, refuse to accept added responsibilities when you’re close to reaching them. Taking on more than you can handle is a surefire recipe for stress.
Try to avoid people who stress you out. If someone consistently causes stress in your life and you can’t turn the relationship around, limit the amount of time you spend with that person or end the relationship entirely.
Learn to tackle what you can alter and accepting those things that cannot be altered. This mindset can remove great deal of stress from your life. While a person might not be content with the stressors that cannot be removed from life, he or she might learn to look at them differently and make the decision not to allow them to impact thoughts and moods so much.
Getting organized in all areas of life can greatly eliminate stress from forgotten appointment, double booking, lost homework, and many other stress traps we face. If we focus on a few key areas of organization, a little work can go a long way. In short, being organized with our schedules, our jobs, our house keeping etc., and couple with discipline strategy is one of the best ways of achieving a stress free life.
While it’s important to have an idea of how you’ll like your schedule to look, it’s also important to keep things flexible enough to accommodate the unexpected. Having a rhythm for your day but a cushion and some backup plans can take the stress out of the unexpected. And if this is done there can never be stress.
Always express your feelings instead of bottling them up. If something or someone is bothering you, communicate your concerns in an open and respectful way. If you don’t voice your feelings, resentment will build and the situation will likely remain the same.
Try and be willing to compromise at times. When you ask someone to change their behavior, be willing to do the same. If both of you are willing to blend at least a little, you’ll have a good chance of finding a happy middle ground.
For you to achieve stress free life you must have sound physical health. You have to exercise regularly. Physical activities play a key role in reducing and preventing the effect of stress. Make time for at least 30 minute exercise three times per week.  Aerobic exercise is very good in releasing pent-up stress and tension.                                                         Also try to eat a healthy balance diet because this helps in nourishing the body and thereby providing energy for daily activities.              Reduce caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes and sugar intake as much as possible. By reducing the amount of coffee, soft drinks, chocolate, sugar, snacks in our diet, we tends to feel more relaxed and we’ll sleep better.

When you diligently and persistently practice all of the above tips, there is no way you would not have a stress free life, especially when you combine it with adequate sleep.

Tips For Stress Free Air Travel

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Traveling by air comes with its own challenges and is often stressful.  Your goal is to experience stress-free air travel.  You are allowed a carry-on  bag so why not pack a little bit  of home to make your airline journey more comfortable and stress-free.

Things to consider taking along for stress-free air travel:

1.             Hygiene during stress-free air travel : It’s not something we might want to think about, but the truth is:  germs are lurking everywhere on an airplane.  Take sanitary wipes and hand sanitizer (3 oz. or smaller) with you to help you have stress-free air travel.  Wipe surfaces you touch such as seat handles and pull-down trays.  Also, use sanitary wipes if you go into the airplane’s bathroom on any surfaces you touch.  Use hand sanitizer before eating and again after exiting the air craft.  A bit of prevention could keep you healthy during your trip or vacation and definitely help you have stress-free air travel .

2.             Nutritious snacks for stress-free air travel: Food or snacks are not always available on airplanes.  Once you get through the security gate take a few minutes to purchase yourself something to snack on.  Fresh fruit (apples, bananas, oranges) are normally available in the airport.  Protein or granola bars are also a good choice to help keep your energy up and hunger down and to help ensure you have stress-free air travel.

3.             Reading material during stress-free air travel: Take a book or magazine with you.  By having something to read, you can keep yourself busy and occupied during your stress-free air travel.  If you like to do crossword puzzles or word search, take along a book of them to help entertain you.  If you forget to pack these items, they will be available in the airport.

4.             Electronic items on your stress-free air travel: Another way to entertain yourself and experience stress-free air travel would be by having your iPod, laptop, etc. with you.  You can listen to music or watch DVD’s to help for your entertainment or to drown out noisy children.  Just make sure you are considerate of those around you by using your headsets.  That helps made sure everyone has stress-free air travel!

5.             Personal reflection during your stress-free air travel: Take your journal or a notebook with you.  This is a perfect time to do some goal setting and/or personal reflection.  Write your thoughts down and use this time to reflect and plan.  This is a great way to help ensure that you have stress-free air travel.

6.             Personal comfort and relaxation while experiencing stress-free air travel: Being in such close and dry (airplanes are very dry) quarters has its own challenges.  Pack small items like lip balm, eye drops, and nasal spray.  Drink plenty of water while in flight.  Have a small blanket or some kind of wrap with you that you can use for warmth in a cool plane.  If it is too warm you have a make-shift pillow to rest your head on while enjoying stress-free air travel.  Listen to your favorite relaxing music.  You might even  be relaxed enough during  your stress-free air travel that you are able to a snooze while in the air!

By packing some “comforts from home” in your carry-on bag, you can experience relaxing and  stress-free air travel.

In today’s world, yesterday’s methods just don’t work. In Getting Things Done, veteran coach and management consultant David Allen shares the breakthrough methods for stress-free performance that he has introduced to tens of thousands of people across the country. Allen’s premise is simple: our productivity is directly proportional to our ability to relax. Only when our minds are clear and our thoughts are organized can we achieve effective productivity and unleash our creative potential. In Getting Things Done Allen shows how to:

€ Apply the “do it, delegate it, defer it, drop it” rule to get your in-box to empty
€ Reassess goals and stay focused in changing situations
€ Plan projects as well as get them unstuck
€ Overcome feelings of confusion, anxiety, and being overwhelmed
€ Feel fine about what you’re not doing

From core principles to proven tricks, Getting Things Done can transform the way you work, showing you how to pick up the pace without wearing yourself down. With first-chapter allusions to martial arts, “flow,” “mind like water,” and other concepts borrowed from the East (and usually mangled), you’d almost think this self-helper from David Allen should have been called Zen and the Art of Schedule Maintenance.

Not quite. Yes, Getting Things Done offers a complete system for downloading all those free-floating gotta-do’s clogging your brain into a sophisticated framework of files and action lists–all purportedly to free your mind to focus on whatever you’re working on. However, it still operates from the decidedly Western notion that if we could just get really, really organized, we could turn ourselves into 24/7 productivity machines. (To wit, Allen, whom the New Economy bible Fast Company has dubbed “the personal productivity guru,” suggests that instead of meditating on crouching tigers and hidden dragons while you wait for a plane, you should unsheathe that high-tech saber known as the cell phone and attack that list of calls you need to return.)

As whole-life-organizing systems go, Allen’s is pretty good, even fun and therapeutic. It starts with the exhortation to take every unaccounted-for scrap of paper in your workstation that you can’t junk, The next step is to write down every unaccounted-for gotta-do cramming your head onto its own scrap of paper. Finally, throw the whole stew into a giant “in-basket”

That’s where the processing and prioritizing begin; in Allen’s system, it get a little convoluted at times, rife as it is with fancy terms, subterms, and sub-subterms for even the simplest concepts. Thank goodness the spine of his system is captured on a straightforward, one-page flowchart that you can pin over your desk and repeatedly consult without having to refer back to the book. That alone is worth the purchase price. Also of value is Allen’s ingenious Two-Minute Rule: if there’s anything you absolutely must do that you can do right now in two minutes or less, then do it now, thus freeing up your time and mind tenfold over the long term. It’s commonsense advice so obvious that most of us completely overlook it, much to our detriment; Allen excels at dispensing such wisdom in this useful, if somewhat belabored, self-improver aimed at everyone from CEOs to soccer moms (who we all know are more organized than most CEOs to start with). –Timothy Murphy
